Lake Matheson at a glance
The Lake Matheson walk (Te Ara Kairaumati) is a short drive from Fox Glacier. A walking track circles the lake through native forest. At the right moment the still water reflects Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. The water is dark because of organic material from the forest.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) recommends clear, windless mornings or evenings around dawn and dusk. Nothing guarantees a reflection. Wind ripples the surface, and on the West Coast cloud often hides the mountains. This is an independent guide, not a DOC page, and the figures below follow DOC's track description.

The walks compared
Choose by time and by what you need from the track.
| Option | Distance | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full loop | 4.4 km | About 1 hour 30 minutes | Easy to intermediate. Not step-free along the whole loop. |
| Jetty Lookout and back | 2.4 km return | About 45 minutes | This section is suitable for wheelchairs. |
| Fox Glacier South Side | 6.4 km return | About 2 hours on foot | A different walk, to a view of the glacier. See the Fox Glacier page. |
Do not describe or plan the whole loop as wheelchair-friendly. Only the Jetty Lookout section is.

Getting to Lake Matheson
By car it is easy. Without one, a shuttle helps.

By shuttle
Glacier Shuttles and Charters lists Lake Matheson at NZ$55 per person return and a Fox Glacier and Lake Matheson combination at NZ$75, both for at least two people. The timetable has no date, so confirm the departure when you book.
Getting there →On the way
The lake fits well into a day with the Fox Glacier South Side walk or a stop on the road from Franz Josef. The where to stay page compares the two villages.
When to go and what to bring
Light, wind and sandflies decide the visit.
For a reflection, plan for dawn or dusk and a calm, clear day. If the forecast is poor, the walk is still pleasant in the forest, but the view of the mountains may be missing. The weather page shows how wet the region is, so keep a spare morning if reflections matter to you.
DOC notes that the summer season from November to April is busier. Bring sandfly repellent. You do not need to reserve the track.
If you want a mountain mirror from the other side of the range, the Hooker Valley Track leads towards Aoraki/Mount Cook itself.

Rules and the café
Small things to know before you set off.
No dogs, no boats
Dogs are not allowed. Boats, kayaks and other watercraft are not allowed on the lake.
Matheson Cafe
The café at the start of the track says it opens daily from 08:00, with breakfast from 08:00 to 11:30 and lunch from 11:30 to 14:30. A regional listing gives 08:30 to 15:30 daily and asks large groups to reserve. The café does not publish a closing time, so do not plan a late meal around it.
Not a glacier walk
The lake has no route onto the ice. For the glaciers see the Franz Josef valley walk or helicopter flights.
