The Franz Josef Glacier walk at a glance

The public walk to the Franz Josef Glacier (Kฤ Roimata o Hine Hukatere) is a rainforest path to a lookout over the valley. The Department of Conservation (DOC) rates it easy to moderate. The river has cut off the foot route beyond the lookout, so you do not continue past it.

The walk does not reach the ice. On 20 October 2026 at 8:45 a.m., DOC reported the lookout 3,000 m from the glacier front, with the road open and conditions good. That distance is a daily figure, not a fixed one. To stand on the ice you need a heli hike or a snow-landing flight.

Getting there and parking

The trailhead is outside the village.

The road

From Franz Josef village, drive south over the Waiho bridge, then turn left onto the Glacier Access Road. The car park is about 4 km along. DOC describes the road as unsealed and suitable for cars, campervans and buses. Floods or slips can close the road and the track.

Parking charges

Parking costs NZ$2.50 per half hour, with a daily maximum of NZ$20 for any number of entries that day. The first 10 minutes are free since 1 September 2026. If you stay longer, pay on arrival. The machines take debit and credit cards, not cash. These are parking fees, not an entry ticket.

Sentinel Rock

Sentinel Rock is a separate short walk of 900 m return, about 20 minutes. It is a short, easy climb to views over the valley, the Waiho River and the glacier. Dogs are not allowed.

Facilities

There are toilets at the glacier car park and none further up the valley. Bring warm and wet-weather clothing, drinking water and insect repellent for sandflies.

Without a car

A local shuttle lists NZ$15 per person return, with pick-ups from accommodation between 8:45 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. The timetable is undated, so confirm a departure with the operator. The Hooker Valley Track at Mount Cook is the comparable valley walk on the other side of the Alps.

Franz Josef or Fox: which valley walk?

Both glaciers have a public walk, and neither reaches the ice.

WalkDistance and timeLookout from the glacier on 20 October 2026Start
Franz Josef valley walk1.7 km return, 30 minutes3,000 mGlacier car park, about 4 km from the village
Fox Glacier South Side6.4 km return, 2 hours on foot or 1 hour by mountain bike2,600 mCar park on SH6, south of the Fox River bridge

The Franz Josef walk is the short option. It suits a rainy half hour between other plans. The Fox South Side track is longer: the first view of the glacier comes after about 40 minutes, and bikes can be left at the old car park for the last stretch on foot. Dogs are not allowed there. The full route is in the guide to the Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe).

If the ice is the point of your trip, treat both walks as a view and book a flight or heli hike for the glacier itself. The Tasman Glacier at Mount Cook is a different valley and has its own guide.

Safety on the track

The valley below a glacier is an active place.

Flash floods and flooding

Sudden surges can come down the river without warning. Never cross barriers, and do not walk beyond the lookout.

Rockfall

Rocks fall from the valley walls. Do not stop in marked rockfall zones, and follow the signs without changing them.

Wildlife and drones

Do not feed wildlife, especially kea, the mountain parrot. On conservation land, drones need a permit.

Check before you drive

The DOC visitor centre at 69 Cron Street, Franz Josef, is the contact point for current track and road conditions. Ask there before you set out after heavy rain.
